  • Connecting to the wider world; this means we will look to form links with our knowledge and look at how our learning connects.

  • We believe that pupils should be engaged as learners at many levels through linking ideas with practical experience which develops the skills of enquiry, observation, research, experimentation, use of apparatus, measuring and checking results, making comparisons and communicating results and findings.
  • We aim to foster open minded thinking and encourage the children to make links in their knowledge and understanding. This promotes discussion and allows children to express their reasoning to the rest of the class.
  • In Science we aim to stimulate and excite pupils' curiosity about changes and events in the world, and to enable them to satisfy this curiosity with understanding. We link pupils' understanding with scientific thought and allow them to develop a greater understanding of the world in which we live and their responsibility to ensure its sustainability.

  • We want our children to be engaged and encouraged to take risks, experiment and reflect on why some ideas and techniques work and others do not.
  • Our children will develop the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. They are exposed to art forms which have shaped history and culture and use art as a unique way to understand and respond to the world they live in.
  • They have opportunities to practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture. The study of a wide range of artists, craftspeople and designers complements this work.
  • Children communicate what they feel and think and value their own and other’s work. They build confidence and self-esteem and develop excitement and a love for the subject.



Design & Technology

  • At Red Hall, we see Design and Technology as a way of helping to prepare our children be a part of today’s rapidly changing world. We live in a technological age and need to encourage children to become independent and creative problem solvers, who can work both individually and as part of a team.
  • From Nursery to Year 6, the children are taught to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding, in order to design and make a product. Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows children to adapt and improve their product. This is a key skill which they need throughout their life.
  • Children learn to select and safely use an appropriate range of tools to produce a product which satisfies a particular purpose. They develop clear decision-making skills and build and construct, adapting their work where necessary.
  • Through our DT curriculum, children will be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products-all with a real-life purpose.



  • Computing is embedded into all areas of learning, whilst also being taught as a discrete subject. Through programmable toys and games in Nursery and Reception, through to the creation of videos and animation further up the School, the children are encouraged to use the technology available to them in a purposeful and positive way, so as to enhance their learning.
  • Each class has access to a unique computer log-in, which enables the children to save their work in individual folders, which ensures that their progression can be tracked as they move up through the school.
  • We educate pupils about the benefits and risks of using technology and through our teaching of E-Safety, we provide safeguards and awareness to enable them to control their online experience. 




  • A modern foreign language is mandatory in KS2. At Red Hall has we learn to speak some French. Children are encouraged to explore French collaboratively through games, songs and rhymes and to show what they have learned through simple conversations and role-plays.
  • Key Stage 2 French lessons provide a stimulating foundation for language learning in secondary school. Topics include greetings, colours, numbers, names and some basic vocabulary that enables children to hold simple conversations and explore language in the context of the wider world. Children are expected to master basic grammar and accurate pronunciation and to converse, present, read and write in the language.
  • Through our History curriculum we aim to inspire pupils, excitement, curiosity and engagement with the past. A range of rich learning opportunities will enable all children to explore and enjoy the story of our local area, our nation and the wider world: recognising change and continuity: links between local, national and global views and how they have developed over time.
  • We aim to motivate and develop children’s interest in the past and its influence on life today and the development of key historical skills through the study of key periods and eras; significant events and individuals, as well as the asking [and answering] of significant questions.
  • We aim to enable all pupils to develop opinions and interpret History using a variety of sources and evidence; to develop research and interpretation skills using a range of media and artefacts and understand how and why the world has changed and what we can learn from the past to make the future a better place. British values are incorporated into the History curriculum promoting values such as Mutual Respect, the rule of Law, Tolerance and Liberty.
  • In line with the National curriculum, the curriculum at Red Hall aims to ensure that all pupils develop key Historical knowledge and skills enabling them to: gain a coherent chronological knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world; to stimulate pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past; to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement; begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.




  • Geography is planned and taught as part of our creative, cross curricular approach to learning. 
  • In our school, pupils begin by studying their local area and then progress to looking at contrasting localities, both within the United Kingdom and also in other parts of the world. The children learn to use maps to locate cities, countries, mountain ranges, rivers, seas and oceans.
  • Children learn about and compare features of different localities e.g. Dudley, UK and global locations. We encourage our pupils to think as global citizens and to take responsibility for their impact on the environment through reducing waste, reusing and recycling.
  • Educational visits form a vital part of engaging children including trip to contrasting locations including Dudley town, Llandudno, and the Malvern Hills.



  • PE at Red Hall Primary School covers a wide range of sport and activity ensuring that children are given the best opportunity to develop fundamental skills and adopt a healthy attitude to being active. PE lessons are planned so as to ensure maximum involvement and opportunities for success. We endeavour to provide opportunities for our children to develop their talents in P.E. through a balanced and well structured programme.
  • During the course of their time at Red Hall the children will have the opportunity to compete in many of the organised competitive events within the local area, e.g. girls’ and boys’ football matches, annual swimming gala, gymnastics, athletics and cricket tournaments.
  • We teach about being active helps to contribute to a healthy mind. 



At Red Hall we recognise that language is an essential building block in child development and we aim to equip each and every pupil with the English skills they need to enjoy lifelong learning. This allows them to enjoy reading for knowledge, as well as pleasure and enjoyment, and to write with a sense of purpose and audience. We also encourage our children to express themselves effectively orally and to listen and learn from each other.

Reading is taught in line with the National Curriculum expectations for word reading and comprehension.  As well as a school library in KS1, each class in school has a book corner with a wide range of books by popular children’s authors. We use Pie Corbett's reading spine to ensure that texts are of a high calibre and engaging.   The school uses Oxford Reading Tree as  its core reading scheme which is a  high quality scheme that takes children from beginning to read to being fluent, questioning, independent readers.  This is supported by Bug Club, Pearson, which ensures that books are phonetically decodable and matches the Letters and Sounds scheme.   Children have access to online reading as well as real books being regularly sent home.  We ensure that we frequently assess children to check that books continue to match their progress and attainment.  Guided reading takes place on a regular basis. For the children, these sessions include a mixture of teacher-led group work, follow up activities linked to the current group read, phonics work, independent reading and even some time to simply immerse themselves in books. 

Phonics at Red Hall is taught using the ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme. a Reading with your child every day hugely improves their reading success and this is something we actively encourage at Red Hall.

Through daily English lessons, children learn the essentials of the English language such as phonics, spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence construction; together with the skills to help shape and organise texts. We aim to make learning fun and relevant by linking activities and experiences to other areas of the curriculum such as history, geography or science. 

At Red Hall, children are taught to listen well, speak clearly, read enthusiastically and write effectively for a wide range of purposes and audiences. Children are supported and encouraged as they learn to express themselves creatively and imaginatively on their way to becoming enthusiastic and independent learners.

Religious Education

  • Pupils are encouraged to develop their knowledge and understanding of the religious beliefs and practices that have become part of the United Kingdom’s rich and diverse culture. Pupils learn about the major concepts common to most religions, for example, worship, celebration, authority, belief and symbol. A greater understanding of these are achieved through first hand experiences by visiting places of worship, handling religious objects, speaking with members of faith communities and assemblies.
  • The R.E curriculum contains two main elements – Learning about Religion and Learning from Religion. We aim to give the children a knowledge of and a respect for both their own traditions and culture and those of others.
